ASSIGNMENT ONE – what to draw?

I chose to draw the items seen in the piece as they all have a meaning to me that I would hope to convert into feeling for the viewer within the picture created.

The teapot originally belonged to my mum, who sadly passed nearly 5 years ago. It was always her joke to remind us that one day we would inherit it (its quite a nice thing from the 70s – with a broken lid – and of no value at all). This inheritance came to pass. It makes me smile but also reminds me of our loss.

I always plant sunflower seeds in the garden a few weeks before we go on our June summer holiday. When we return from holiday the seedlings have begun to climb upwards and establish themselves. They grow very quickly and mark the passing of the summer season. By the time the are fully grown its the beginning of Autumn. Some don’t make it – for a variety of reasons (slugs, snails, weather conditions, knocked over by the cats, me forgetting to water them). They mark the passing of a chunk of the year.

I have looked in that mirror every day, probably for at least the last 20 years! That mirror knows every inch of my face. It has watched me apply my morning mask for so long now. Poor thing!

The crate at the back of the piece was the postbox for my wedding last year. It had a special job to do then and I have put it back to work for me now.

I used hessian as I really like the rustic texture of it.  I thought it a challenge to reproduce its rough, open weave.

The honeysuckle leaves at the front, come from a bush in my garden that has been there ever since we moved into my home over 25 years ago.

I love a glass of wine. It was my reward for finishing the piece!
