Part 2 Intimacy – Research Point 2 Positive and Negative Space

I chose the examples below to show how artists incorporate positive and negative spaces in an effective way. I particularly like the work of Alex Katz, as the pieces convey energy and emotion despite being blocks of colour. I think this is achieved through the composition itself – the angles of the trees and flowers, the shape of the space that is inhabited and the shape of the space that is empty. The intensity of the colour used also prompts an emotional reaction.
