Part 2 Intimacy – Research Point 3 Domestic Interiors

MARY COZENS WALKERS WORLD ANTHONY GREEN royal academy org

Anthony Green’ images of interiors open up like boxes – so the viewer has a 3D view of many of a room’s surfaces and planes. As well as being a really clever idea and detailed work they allow us a very intimate look at the life of the person sitting in the room. You can see the pictures on their wall, choice of decoration, many personal items, even the beams of the ceiling. You are a fly on their wall. You can also see a story – in the case above of possible loneliness and infirmity.

The image above is of a very modern interior. You can almost date the work by the objects and fashions it shows. The artist has represented the room as an architectural box with blocks of colour. It represents a smart stylish somewhat minimal interior and you can sense and deduce from the choice of furniture and artwork, characteristics of person who may live there.

This interior only hints at the shape of the room, from the top right corner (where lines meet) – but you understand the shape of the room based, partly, just on this. It is very relaxed space. The artist gives an impression of comfort, relaxation, homeliness and softness by the use of flowing lines and soft colour and the positioning of the objects inside, Clothing is draped casually over things cushions are at haphazard angles. The windows and height of the room add to the airiness and openness. You also get an idea of the person from their interior.

The lighting and shodows of this room suggest much about the time of day and even possibly the time of year. The lighting brings this piece to life . The open draw makes the room very lived- in and homely.

This interior has all for sides of the room unwrapped into a line. Again you get an idea of the person from their possessions and the decoration of the room. The furniture and fabric choices place it in history. Clutter all around – but it looks cosy and lived in. It looks a busy space… and the layout makes it look like the owner moves from one area to the next, doing things as they go…
