ASSIGNMENT 2

In the paragraphs below I have tried to demonstrate how this assignment piece meets the assessment criteria of the course: Demonstration of Technical and Visual Skills; Quality of Outcome; Demonstration of Creativity; Context Reflection

In assignment 2 I tried to pull together some of the elements that I’ve worked on in this part of course. I have tried to use colour effectively. I love colour – so I enjoyed trying to make a statement within the piece with choice of subject and colour. I used a variety of different media: crayon, felt pen, pencil, pastel sticks pastel pencils, graphite pencil, coloured pencils. These media all produce different effects and I tried to use them appropriately, i.e. crayon for the heavy, thick plant pot, felt pen for the very bright flowers, pencil for the delicate, structured leaves, pastel to create background and shading (pastel covers a large area). I wanted a composition that used study of interior as well as the subject itself, so I used a corner of a room and a window to frame the main subject.

RELECTION

Aspects of the final drawing that I liked are as follows: Colour – choice of colour to create an impact: Medium used – a variety of drawing materials as appropriate to the different elements; Composition – using a window as a light source, hinting on the world beyond the subject and the energy flow of objects from top left hand corner to bottom right hand corner.; Techical elements – hints of reflection in the window and light and shade under the pot and window ledge; use of negative space in the pot and the window.

Aspects of the final drawing that didn’t work for me are as follows: The blue drop of the curtain is too heavy, blocky and clumsy (needs a lighter touch and more flow with the pastel); The flowers are too small – the pot is indeed very large in reality, but the flowers still need to be bigger; The leaves could do with more delicate pencil work within them to hint at light, shade and shape; I need to keep improving my technical ability.

I did get frustrated with the aspects of the drawing that didn’t work and thought Id have another go, but I rejected my second attempt -see below.

I wanted to make the flowers larger and the curtain less blocky – but I feel this version then lost other positive aspects demonstrated in the first work, i.e. leaves and flowers not as delicate, the white plant at the front looked more like frog spawn! I think you can see my frustration in this version. Hence I submitted the first version as the Assignment piece.

I definitely work best on the first attempt of something – when it is spontaneous and energetic. To re-work a piece effectively I think I would need to change aspects of the piece enough to keep me engaged and excited by it. Also, I had a tight deadline – this made me impatient.
